in the beginning

Well hello .... to the beginning, the start, the dipping of toes - ever so sheepishly - into the water.

A good way to start is to think of a blog as a personal journal - whatever comes to mind is the right thing at the time, and if you're only blogging for yourself - well, what's wrong with that? That's a good place to start.

Starting lets you shake off the layers of dust, peer through the cobwebs and get past the old stuff that holds you back. The juicy writing happens a bit later, when you grow into your words and get down to the real message. Because we all have a message in us. It just hides away in the shadows much of the time. But we all know it's there.

The blank sheet of paper is no more. Suddenly, at 12.05 in the morning, when most people are finishing the day, I'm making a start. The empty page has black marks and squiggles on it. Doesn't matter if the squiggles are rubbish. It's a start. Everything else is easy now.

What have I learned tonight? That instead of waiting for the right moment to be inspired to act, let inspiration find you. It doesn't always come with bells and whistles on. It quietly whispers, "just do it, do it now. ask no questions. make a mark on a page. any mark. it's just a beginning. that's all it is." If you'd told me that I'd start a blog tonight, I'd have laughed.

Yes, this is about the first move. And I know that you know how hard the first move can be. Sometimes it needs a glass or two of wine. But, boy, how satisfying to know that the page is no longer blank.
